This course focuses on pathophysiology, principles of motivation, learning theories, and their application to disease processes. A review of diseases from a systems approach will be stressed along with discussions regarding the impact of diversity, delivery of patient education, complementary/alternative therapies, and community resources.

  • Overview of Patient Education

    • Identify theories and principles of motivation and their application to disease prevention and health promotion.
    • Identify and apply learning theories to patient education programs across the life span.
    • Define the domains of learning and develop objectives using each.
    • Develop an effective patient education program.
    • Identify the role of diversity in patient education.
  • Psycho-Neurological and Endocrine

    • Identify pertinent educational outcomes related to pathophysiology of the disease.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Describe available resources for patients with psycho-neurological and endocrine disorders.
    • Identify self-care options including complementary/alternative therapies and self-prescribing.
  • Cardiac and Pulmonary

    • Identify pertinent educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology of the disease.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Describe available resources for patients with cardiac and pulmonary disorders.
    • Identify self-care options including complementary/alternative therapies and self-prescribing.
  • Immunology and Oncology

    • Identify pertinent educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology of the disease.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Describe available resources for patients with immunologic and oncology disorders.
    • Identify self-care options including complementary/alternative therapies and self-prescribing.
  • Gastrointestinal

    • Identify pertinent educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology of the disease.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Describe available resources for patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
    • Identify self-care options including complementary/alternative therapies and self-prescribing.
  • Reproductive and GU

    • Identify pertinent educational outcomes related to the pathophysiology of the disease.
    • Develop educational strategies for use in patient education.
    • Describe available resources for patients with reproductive disorders.
    • Identify self-care options including complementary/alternative therapies and self-prescribing.
