This course offers an intensive introduction to philosophical problems and methodologies as developed by major figures in the history of philosophy. The course also covers the application of philosophical methods to problem solving, decision-making, ethical thought, and strategic thinking.

  • Nature of Philosophy

    • Describe approaches to philosophical questions.
    • Define the major philosophical areas of inquiry.
    • Explain how philosophy and culture interact in the development of thought.
  • Epistemology

    • Summarize the historical development of epistemology.
    • Identify the key contributors to the field of epistemology.
    • Explain the principal issues of epistemology.
  • Metaphysics

    • Summarize the historical development of metaphysics.
    • Identify the key contributors to the field of metaphysics.
    • Explain the principal issues of metaphysics.
    • Compare and contrast epistemology and metaphysics.
  • Moral, Social, and Political Philosophy

    • Summarize the historical development of moral, social, and political philosophy.
    • Identify the key contributors to the fields of moral, social, and political philosophy.
    • Explain the principal issues of moral, social, and political philosophy.
    • Differentiate moral, social, and political philosophy.
  • Current Developments in Philosophy

    • Analyze contemporary philosophic positions.
    • Explain how global integration of cultures has affected contemporary philosophical thinking.
    • Describe Eastern metaphysical influences on contemporary philosophical thinking.
