POL469 Contemporary Political Thought
Course Description
This course provides a broad overview of international issues facing the United States and the world. These issues range from the challenge of feeding the world's growing population to global warming and from nuclear terrorism to the promotion of human rights. Issues are discussed from opposing viewpoints in order to stimulate thinking, discussion, and insight. The purpose of the course is to provide students with a broad overview of the challenges, obstacles, and opportunities of living in an increasingly interconnected and complex world.
Topics and Objectives
The Study of International Relations
- Analyze why resolving international issues is so difficult.
- Evaluate the differing solutions for resolving an international issue.
- Discuss strategies governments use to guide their actions toward other states.
Global Security Issues
- Analyze the various views on the origins and results of the Cold War.
- Discuss the differing viewpoints on whether or not Islamic Fundamentalism can peacefully coexist with the West.
- Analyze the impact of nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons on international relations.
- Evaluate the differing opinions on the effectiveness of the United Nations.
Global Economic Issues
- Analyze different viewpoints concerning the impact of free trade on the world economy.
- Evaluate the different perspectives on whether or not developing countries are helped or harmed by the capitalist system.
Global Social Issues
- Examine the different perspectives on whether or not the world's population can be fed.
- Analyze the issues and facts concerning the ability of the world to sustain its current population growth rates.
- Evaluate the various arguments on the issue of global warming.
International Politics and the Twenty-First Century
- Evaluate whether or not culture or nationalism will be the driving force in international politics.
- Analyze the future of democracy as a form of government among emerging nations.
