Introduction To Research And Information Utilization –

This course introduces students to the research process, with emphasis on academic applicability. Students will gather and utilize primary and secondary data and information through the exploration of digital libraries, the Internet, and other sources of information. Students will analyze and evaluate sources in the course of preparing a research paper, with an additional focus on the responsible use of information and correct documentation.
This undergraduate-level course is 5 weeks. To enroll, speak with an Enrollment Advisor.
  • Research Preparation and Topic Selection

    • Examine the purpose of research.
    • Choose a research topic based on personal or professional interests.
    • Develop a research question.
    • Develop a research proposal.
  • Research

    • Use text previewing and reading strategies to select research.
    • Compare and contrast primary and secondary research.
    • Evaluate print and electronic information for reliability, validity, and authority.
  • Research Project Organization

    • Write a thesis statement.
    • Outline the scope and sequence of a research project.
  • Drafting the Research Paper

    • Evaluate the first draft of a research paper.
    • Use appropriate methods for documenting sources.
    • Differentiate between plagiarism and copyright violation.
  • Final Draft

    • Develop a final draft of a research paper.
