Course Description

This course surveys a broad range of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies to prepare learners to apply them to a variety of research questions. Topics include development of problem statements, purpose statements, research questions, and hypotheses; conducting a literature review (with an emphasis on reading and evaluating existing research) and ensuring originality of the contribution; and creating a draft concept paper for each of the three research topics identified during PSY/720R.

Course Competencies

  • Apply best practices of scholarly writing to developing a research proposal.
  • Create compelling problem statements that address current situations, issues, or observations in the field of industrial/organizational psychology.
  • Articulate clearly both quantitative and qualitative purpose statements that solve or address research problems.
  • Formulate clear and researchable quantitative and qualitative research questions to guide research inquiries.
  • Develop understandable and testable research hypotheses for quantitative studies.
  • Synthesize historical and germinal literature to demonstrate understanding of relevant literature and ensure originality of proposed quantitative and qualitative research.
