Environmental Issues And Ethics –

This course applies scientific, philosophical, economic, and ethical principles to current and future environmental issues. Students will analyze the cumulative impact of human activities on global ecosystems, as well as responsibilities to the natural world, in terms of the complex interrelationships humans have with their environment.
This undergraduate-level course is 5 weeks. To enroll, speak with an Enrollment Advisor.
  • Environmental Policy and Management

    • Describe various viewpoints on the issue of climate change.
    • Analyze the role and effects of government policy on environmental issues.
  • Environmental Justice and Economics

    • Describe the tension between environmental justice and economics issues.
    • Describe the value of discussing environmental justice issues in environmental impact statements and other planning documents.
    • Define the term environmental justice.
  • Resource Limitations and the Environment

    • Evaluate the role of conservation in solving limited-resource problems.
    • Evaluate the economic and ethical issues surrounding nuclear energy.
    • Describe the advantages and disadvantages to society and the environment of different forms of renewable energy.
    • Explain the relative abundance and environmental impact of various fossil fuels.
  • Ethics and Science

    • Identify alternative solutions to current environmental issues.
    • Determine the benefits and limitations of scientific method and inquiry as they apply to environmental issues.
    • Describe the connection among science, technology, and environmental issues.
  • Ethical Understanding of Environmental Problems

    • Identify the local impact of environmental issues.
    • Explain how ethics influences our course of action regarding principal environmental issues.
    • Compare various schools of thought in environmental ethics.
