Margery Melvin, JD
Margery L. Melvin is an administrative law judge in the Affordable Care Act Unit of the Department of Social Services. She previously served as a deputy commissioner with the California Board of Parole Hearings where she conducted quasi-judicial hearings concerning parole revocation, mentally disordered offender and lifer inmate matters. Margery was admitted to the California bar in 1999. She is a graduate of the University of California, Riverside, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Law & Society in 1994. Margery later went on to receive her Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in 1998. She is licensed to practice in the State of California, and is a member of the California State Bar. Margery is also admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit and the California Supreme Court.
In addition to her formal education, Margery completed a National Judicial College course in specialized training on state and federal administrative law. From 2000 to 2006, Margery ran her own law firm where she conducted arbitration hearings, performed pretrial duties and conducted trials in juvenile jurisdiction, criminal, civil and parole revocation matters. Prior to opening her firm, Margery was an associate attorney with a statewide defense firm, where she worked exclusively in the area of employment law, representing both private and public employers in matters involving wrongful termination, sexual harassment, disability discrimination and civil rights violations.
She is a member of Black Women Lawyers of Los Angeles, the Richard T. Fields Bar Association and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, an international public service sorority. Margery currently serves as a lead faculty area chair in the College of Security and Criminal Justice for the University of Phoenix Southern California Campusx. When she is not nurturing her 6-year-old violinist daughter, this self-proclaimed artist and entrepreneur is creating fine corsages as the owner of Blooming Violets, a fine corsage boutique.
