Start Strong Event features jobs for military

Jobs for military

If you’re about to get out of the military or already have finished serving your country and need a civilian job, you’re in luck: University of Phoenix is partnering with Hiring Our Heroes — a program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation — to sponsor the Start Strong Event at 11 campuses in April and May. The goal: To help active-duty servicemembers, veterans and their spouses find employment.

“These events are perfect for anyone who is getting ready to transition to civilian life,” says retired U.S. Army Col. Garland Williams, associate regional vice president of the University of Phoenix Military Division.

With as many as 75 companies on hand, all actively looking to hire, Williams says, active-duty servicemembers, veterans and their spouses will have a wide range of employers to meet with, and they’ll be able to learn which firms might be good fits.

Participants don’t have to be University students, and registration for the event, though available, is not required to attend. “You just need to show up, wearing appropriate attire — so no flip-flops — and be ready to talk about what skills you would bring to a company,” Williams says, “because you may wind up sitting down and talking to an employer.”

Attendees also should carry their resumés, even if they’re just rough drafts, because a resumé-writing workshop will be offered to help them polish their presentations.
