Kate Voegele is the first artist to sign with Myspace Records (distributed by Interscope Records
®). Since releasing her album
Don’t Look Away last year, Kate’s music career has taken off. Now she’s headlining her own tour presented by University of Phoenix—the Kate Voegele Back 2 School Tour—so her days are jam-packed with tour and media events.
But Kate will be scheduling more than sound checks and radio spots. She’s also working school into her schedule, so she doesn’t have to leave her other passions behind.

Why is Kate going to school?
For Kate, going to school isn’t just about earning a degree. It’s about learning. “I have always been really fascinated by learning—the process of learning anything new,” she says. “I love to explore things that I’m interested in…. To really gain understanding about a subject that interests you is such a cool thing. And I think that’s why I’m so passionate about education, because there’s so much to learn and there’s so much to get involved in, and it can apply to your life in ways that you don’t necessarily know at the outset.”
Why did Kate choose University of Phoenix?
When Kate was getting ready to tour last spring, she knew she needed to find a school that could keep up with her on the road—and provide the enriching learning opportunities that are so important to her. Best of all, Kate knows that she can look forward to satisfying her passion for learning. University of Phoenix may offer degree programs online, but as Kate has found, that doesn’t mean it isn’t challenging or academically rigorous.
What has Kate thought of her experience at University of Phoenix so far?
Kate was able to transfer credits from another university and says she has loved the experience so far. She became fast friends with Pam, her enrollment representative, who walked Kate through the online classroom and made sure that she was all ready to go before her classes got started.
Getting ready to start her very first class, Kate explained to Pam that “What I love about University of Phoenix is that you guys say, ‘You don’t have to be full-time students, you don’t have to live on campus; you can live your life and you can be a student and you can get your degree.’ And it’s very innovative and it’s really smart because I’m not the only person with a busy life.”
She had a great time getting to know her classmates through the online forums. And she’s found that she has the time to log on to class and get her assignments done, even with her crazy schedule.
What degree is Kate pursuing?
With a passion for learning more about human behavior, Kate chose to enroll in the
Bachelor of Science in Psychology program at University of Phoenix. “Psychology is completely fascinating to me in so many ways,” she explains. “It really focuses so much on the human condition and the way that people’s memories, and their feelings and emotions, and their thoughts operate.”
Why is Kate pursuing a degree while rocking the country?
Earning her bachelor’s degree in psychology allows Kate to branch out beyond her music and acting careers. “It’s not throwing all my eggs in one basket and just focusing on one thing. I’m able to really have a balance in my life,” she tells us. “And more than anything, I think it will be awesome because I think it can really be something that will allow me to help people at some point.”
Has Kate made any connections between education and her careers?
Kate’s songwriting came into play during her
communications class, when she wrote a paper about her writing style. “Because I’m a songwriter, I do a lot of prewriting and brainstorming and stuff like that. And in my paper I talked about how when I do stuff for school I have to organize my writing a lot more.” Kate says she found it really interesting to discuss with her classmates what it’s like to switch back and forth between the two writing styles.
And for a psych course, Kate had to write a paper analyzing the personality traits of a character from a TV show. She ended up writing her paper on one of the characters from CW’s
One Tree Hill, the show on which she guest stars as Mia, a singer in a rock band. “It was pretty cool to tie both parts of my life together,” she says.
How does Kate balance her coursework?
With her jam-packed schedule, Kate quickly figured out how to balance going to school with her music career. “There were definitely challenges along the way; at first it was so tough to figure out when I could do my homework and when I could log on to class. But it was something that I ended up fixing really easily by just scheduling times into my day when I could log on where there was a good Internet connection, and times that I could do my homework and get things done. Scheduling those in with all my other things that I had on my Day Sheet, I ended up finding a really good system.”
What has been Kate’s greatest lesson learned so far?
After completing two courses at University of Phoenix, Kate’s greatest lesson has been in time management. “It’s really taught me so much—not only specifically about the subject I’ve been studying in these classes, but more than that, it’s really taught me about how to have a daily schedule that’s not me spreading myself too thin…. I think that’s also going to help me in general in the future with anything that involves time management. I think that this is going to help immensely.”
