NRA Foundation awards $20,000 in scholarships
The National Rifle Association (NRA) Foundation has announced the recipients of the 2010 Youth Education Summit (YES) grand scholarships, which gave a total of $20,000 in financial assistance to eight high school students who plan to pursue higher education.
In order to be eligible for this scholarship opportunity, students must attend the summit, which is a seven-day trip to Washington, DC for high school students. At the event, participants learn about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as well as the importance of being active in politics.
After the trip, students are asked to complete the application, which includes the development of a portfolio. In the portfolio, candidates must demonstrate how YES has contributed to their personal growth and informed them about NRA-sponsored programs. Eligible candidates must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit an essay about the second amendment, a personal statement, a copy of their high school transcript as well as three recommendations.
The goal of the event is to give young people the opportunity to be aware of all levels of government, including learning about their own state's heritage and history. YES also aims to encourage volunteering for community service organizations and becoming an active citizen.
