Government invests $5.9 million in education of migrant students, workers
Five-year grants amounting to $5.9 million have been awarded to programs in nine states that cater to migrant workers and their children. The awards will be directed toward high school and college students through the High School Equivalency Program (HEP) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).
“The students helped by HEP and CAMP are some of the most motivated learners in America,” the nation’s schools chief Arne Duncan said in a press release. “These grants will help hardworking farmworkers and their families obtain the quality education that they need to compete in the 21st century global economy.”
CAMP, which serves about 2,000 students each year, helps to fund the first year of undergraduate studies of migrant and seasonal workers as well as their children. The program is aimed at increasing postsecondary education among migrant and seasonal farm workers.
HEP grants help migrant and seasonal workers, as well as their immediate family members, earn high school diplomas as well as help guide them toward secondary education.
