Wired education: How the internet has impacted the way we learn

There’s no denying that the internet has made an indelible mark on education across the world. Both teachers and students use the internet in ways that brick and mortar libraries were never used in the past, and in many ways the internet has taken the place of a trip to the library in the majority of academic settings.

According to an infographic by SEO.com that looks at the way the internet has changed education, an astonishing 93 percent of students look to the internet, using Google® or Bing® search engines, when given a research project or question to answer as opposed to heading to a library. Unfortunately, this can have its drawbacks, as most student still look to user-generated Wikipedia as a research source, despite faculty warnings against doing so.

Nonetheless, educators have taken to the internet almost as much as their students, considering the fact that 90 percent of faculty say they use social media in their classrooms and 80 percent say they have used online video in their classes. Meanwhile, just 1 out of 3 educators say online teaching is inferior to face-to-face interaction with students.
