Fifth Annual Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need Campaign Collects Over 4,500 New Baby Items for New Mexico's Families in Need
ALBUQUERQUE, June 18, 2009 — On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at 12:30 pm University of Phoenix Albuquerque campus will deliver over 4,500 new baby items collected as a result of the University's month-long Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need campaign. The much needed items will directly benefit the thousands of at-risk babies born to New Mexico families each year. The items will be delivered to Presbyterian Hospital's PRESious Beginnings Program. This is the fifth year the University has sponsored the Newborns in Need campaign, bringing in over 1,500 more items than the 2008 effort.
In New Mexico alone, over 30% of children under the age five live in poverty. Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need provides much needed supplies for families to give their babies a healthy start on life. Charity baby showers hosted by individuals and local businesses, corporate drives and public donations provide the items for donation.

Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need is a month-long public service campaign that collects new baby items for low-income families at a designated hospital. For the fifth consecutive year, University of Phoenix New Mexico served as the presenting sponsor and Presbyterian Hospital's PRESious Beginnings Program was the recipient of the Albuquerque, New Mexico campaign which took place during the month of April, 2009. In addition to the efforts of the sponsors, community citizens were encouraged to participate by hosting charity baby showers and making individual donations at drop-off locations throughout the city of Albuquerque.

PRESious Beginnings Perinatal Case Management Program (PB) is one of many special services offered by Albuquerque's Presbyterian Hospital. PB works with women aged 12 - 53 who are subject to risks resulting from medical problems, social issues and disadvantaged economic status. PB staff members assist women in the central region of New Mexico and work with maternal-child case managers around the state.
