University of Phoenix and Cleantech Open Form New Internship Program

University students and alumni to participate in the management of a highly successful accelerator program, and learn first-hand from top clean- and sustainable-technology entrepreneurs

PHOENIX and PALO ALTO, Calif., May 22, 2013—University of Phoenix® and the Cleantech Open, the world’s largest cleantech accelerator, announced the launch of a new internship program that provides University students and alumni the opportunity to work alongside senior management of the Cleantech Open as they foster the next generation of successful entrepreneurs creating tomorrow’s clean and sustainable technologies.

As the official education partner of the Cleantech Open, University of Phoenix provides crucial clean-technology and business curriculum to semifinalists, finalists and alumni companies of the Cleantech Open. The new internship program expands on this to provide opportunities for University students and alumni to showcase their skills while learning about the entrepreneurial process. Interns who participate in the program will have opportunities to work on a variety of programs at the Cleantech Open national office in California, or with regional Cleantech Open organizations. They will also get the chance to interact with some of tomorrow’s most promising cleantech entrepreneurs taking part in the cleantech accelerator program.

“The success of the Cleantech Open has been fueled almost entirely by volunteers — many of whom participate specifically to network and connect with the innovators who are shaping tomorrow’s smart cleantech solutions,” said Rex Northen, executive director of the Cleantech Open. “University of Phoenix interns will certainly benefit in a similar manner, and will also bring the latest problem-solving skills and fresh ideas to the table. We can’t wait to have them on board.”

Enrollment for the internship program is now open, with new internship positions being added regularly. Positions provide opportunities for interns to learn about what it takes to run a national and global volunteer organization, how to start up and operate a cleantech business, understand how to run successful marketing campaigns, learn directly from the mentors and entrepreneurs progressing through the Cleantech Open accelerator program, and develop skills as an emerging leader in clean technology through building the proper business networks.

“University of Phoenix is dedicated to the idea that all Americans not only have access to a quality higher education, but also have access to safe, healthy environments where they can continue to learn, explore and grow both personally and professionally,” said Pat Gottfried, vice president of Corporate Social Responsibility for Apollo Education Group, parent company of University of Phoenix. “This new internship program allows our students and alumni to take their education to new levels by not only gaining insight into the entrepreneurial process, but also by continuing the University’s commitment to sustainability.”
