SAS residencies: A fulfilling experience
To satisfy the requirements of a doctoral degree at the School of Advanced Studies (SAS) at University of Phoenix, learners attend on-site residencies based on degree requirements. Residencies are time-intensive and rigorous challenges that provide an enriching experience for the learners.
The SAS residency experience
There are several reasons why the SAS residency experience is enriching for learners. The first relates to the learners themselves. Learners seeking a doctoral degree are well advanced in their careers, can be categorized as lifelong learners, and have an intense desire to learn the subject matter that is the basis for their doctoral studies and research.
A benefit for the learners is that all residency facilitators have doctorates. The SAS faculty have extensive work experience that adds to the classroom discussion. Residencies provide opportunities for learners to interact with faculty who are passionate about education and want to help learners as they embark on their doctoral journeys.
The residency experience is enhanced by the doctoral residency administrative staff who work tirelessly to provide an environment conducive to learning for both learners and faculty. These individuals help provide information about hotel, flights and shuttles. They interact with catering and hotel staff to help create a supportive environment where learning can occur without interruption.
Defining each learner’s doctoral journey
The SAS residency varies from 3 to 8 days depending on the year and the learner’s program. Residencies facilitate a high level of academic discourse, from the completion of the required assignments, to the interaction with colleagues and facilitators; the SAS residency is full of academic rigor.
While it is a learning experience, the residency also helps forge a community of scholars where new skills are learned and new networking opportunities are facilitated. Not only does this contribute to the academic and professional success of the learners, it helps instill an atmosphere of camaraderie while requiring a no-nonsense problem-solving approach.
