MCBCE1010 Medical Coding and Billing Using ICD-9-CM

The course is an introduction to medical coding (ICD-9 with introduction of ICD-10) and billing (Medicare, private insurance, and state Medicaid programs) for participants interested in furthering career opportunities in a medical billing department or a physician’s office, clinic or federally qualified health center. The participant will learn the basics of registering patient information, conducting insurance verification, pre-authorizations and referral tasks, the ethical and legal obligations of a professional coder and ICD-9 coding.

MCBCE1020 Medical Coding and Billing Using CPT and HCPCS

The course is an introduction to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) used in a medical billing department of a physician’s office, clinic or federally qualified health center. The participant will learn the basics of the health reimbursement system, insurance form preparation and filing claim procedures, and the application of CPT and ICD-9-CM codes.

MCBCE1030 Medical Terminology

The course is an introduction to health and medical terminology. Participants will develop skills in pronouncing, defining, and spelling terms used in the physician’s office, clinic, or federally qualified health center. The participant will review medical records and documents related to specific pathophysiology and treatments to build word skills.

MCBCE1040 Disease Process and Pharmacology I

The course is an introduction to anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and interventions (pharmacology and procedures) in humans. Topics will include: basic biophysiology, the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, and the nervous system.

MCBCE1050 Disease Process and Pharmacology II

Disease Process and Pharmacology II is an introduction to anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and interventions (pharmacology and procedures) in humans. Topics include growth and development (genetics, and aging), integumentary system, the gastrointestinal system, the respiratory system, and reproductive systems (pregnancy and infertility). There are no prerequisites for this course, but keyboarding skills, computer literacy, and some experience in the allied health field are beneficial. Knowledge of medical terminology is recommended.

MCBCE1060 Coding and Billing in the Surgical Environment

This course is essential to the development of coding and billing skills for the surgical environment of the medical office, ambulatory surgical center, or hospital surgical area. The participant identifies and codes diseases, laboratory, pharmacology, and procedures using the 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000, 50,000, and 60,000 codes, including modifiers, evaluation and management, and anesthesia.

MCBCE1070 ICD Coding - Hospital Inpatient Services

In this course, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and applications of health information coding. Coding is the transformation of verbal descriptions of disease, injuries, and procedures into standard alphanumeric designations that are used for a variety of purposes. Principles and guidelines for using the ICD-9 (current version) in coding diagnosis and procedures in an inpatient setting are covered.

MCBCE1080 ICD Coding - Hospital Outpatient Services

This course introduces students to the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding system. Students learn to interpret and comprehend principles and applications of this coding system for accurate code assignments.

MCBCE1090 ICD Coding – Emergency Room Care Coding

This course covers ICD-9-CM diagnostic codes and CPT procedure codes with special emphasis on evaluation and management (E/M) codes. Students will learn to interpret and comprehend principles and applications of this coding system for accurate code assignments for hospital emergency departments.

MCBCE1110 ICD Coding: Outpatient Services

Medical coding (Basic coding -E&M, modifiers, and so forth) and compliance issues are covered, with special emphasis on interventional radiology, cardiology special procedures, and pain management to ensure appropriate reimbursement and coding compliance for hospital services.

MCBCE1120 ICD Coding – Health Care Reimbursement Methodologies

This course will cover the historical development of health care reimbursement, current reimbursement processes, forms, and support practices for health care reimbursement and prospective payment systems (PPS) that pre-establish reimbursement rates for health care services. Medicare payment systems and fee schedules are discussed.

NACE2020 Cultural-Spiritual Competencies in Health Care

Participants will recognize how patients’ spiritual or religious philosophies can affect their health care. Participants will learn the importance of performing a spiritual assessment of their patients, and of understanding the cultural preferences that influence the prevention and treatment of illness.

NACE2030 Healing Therapies

This course introduces participants to the philosophy and practice of healing therapies as complementary and alternative medicine. Emphasis is placed on understanding various healing therapies and their role as singular and adjunct treatments for acute and chronic ailments.

NACE2040 Traditional Chinese Medicine

This course examines the unique system of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Participants will learn how diagnosis is made using the theories of yin-yang and the five elements. The typical therapies of acupuncture, massage, and herbal medicine will also be discussed.

NACE2050 Homeopathic Medicine

This course focuses on the underlying philosophy and remedies used in Homeopathic medicine. Participants explore Homeopathic medicine as a complementary and alternative medicine for acute and chronic ailments.

NECE4010 Curriculum Design in Nursing Education

This course emphasizes practical and functional approaches to the design of curriculum and educational programs in nursing and health care. Participants will learn about the philosophical foundations of education and curriculum development, and the contexts within which nursing curriculum and educational programs in health care are developed. A model for curriculum design will be examined and participants will learn how to develop educational programs or courses within the context of organizational mission and philosophy, philosophical or theoretical frameworks, and desired learning outcomes and competencies.

NECE4020 Teaching Strategies for Nurse Educators

This course focuses on teaching strategies employed by nurse educators in different types of educational settings. Emphasis will be on learner-centered nursing education and conditions which support student learning. Participants will examine behaviorist, cognitive, social learning, humanist, and constructivist learning theories and explore different learning styles including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. The differences between passive and active learning will also be considered. Upon completion of this course, students will have learned how to develop and identify teaching strategies for different learning situations within health care and nursing settings.

NECE4030 Multiple Intelligences in Nurse Education

This course focuses on the eight intelligences originally identified by Howard Gardner in 1983, and the relationship of the multiple intelligences to human potential for learning in nursing and other healthcare environments. Developing effective nursing education strategies for each of the eight intelligences will be the focus of this course. Upon completion of this course participants will, through classroom exercises and discussions apply to education and workplace cultures these concepts.

NECE4040 Managing Learning Needs of Diverse Populations in Nursing

This course is intended for the registered nurse looking to enhance their skills and abilities required to teach the adult learner. The roles for the professional nurse as an educator, as well as common strategies and tools used to enhance the education of a diverse adult learning audience, will be explored. Upon completion of this course, the professional nurse will be able to develop strategies to enhance their ability to teach a diverse population.  

NMCE1010 Managing Nursing Turnover

This course focuses on the consequences of high nursing turnover rates in a hospital setting. To manage turnover, the nurse manager must identify its underlying causes and then develop key strategies to combat the challenges of that turnover.

NMCE1020 Business and Nursing Case Management

This course examines the business side of case management for nurses. Participants in this course will examine hospital contracts with various payees. In addition, they will learn the implications of these contracts on hospitals and patients.

NMCE1030 Legally Defensible Discipline for Nurse Managers

This course focuses on methods for disciplining nursing staff in a fair and legally defensible way. Participants will also learn how to use discipline as a method to change behavior.

NMCE1040 Delegating for Nurse Managers

This course examines effective delegation. Participants of this course will identify key components of delegation, including task assignment, staff knowledge, building trust and accountability.

NMCE1050 Culturally Appropriate Patient Care

This course focuses on the care of patients in a constantly changing and diverse population. Participants will learn the meaning of culturally sensitive care, steps to identify their own beliefs about providing care to patients, and methods to ensure cultural competence in patient care.

NMCE1060 Successful Meetings – Strategies for Nurses

This course explores skills necessary to plan and implement successful meetings in healthcare settings. The roles of the nurse/healthcare provider as meeting facilitator as well as strategies to ensure smooth, well-structured meetings are explored. Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to develop meeting agendas and plan successful meetings that avoid common pitfalls. 

NMCE1070 Nursing Leadership Styles

This course focuses on leadership styles and how they can be developed by nurses who have either a staff role or a management role. The course will review the history and development of leadership styles as well as their application in both the care of patients and in the management of staff groups. Participants in this course will review scenarios found in clinical and management environments in order to define their own leadership style.

NPCE3010 Pain Management

This course examines the increasing complexity of meeting the demands of pain management across the lifespan. Participants review techniques of pain assessment, as well as consider the challenges of pain management in unique populations.

NPCE3020 Pediatric Over-the-Counter Medications

This course reviews the types of Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications available to the public. Participants will review the physiological effects of medications on pediatric patients and adults. The role of the FDA will also be discussed.

NPCE3030 Mental Illness Across the Lifespan

This course discusses the growing problem of mental illness. Participants will review the definition of three of the most common psychiatric diagnoses, depression, anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder. An overview of treatment options as well as barriers to access psychiatric care will be examined. The specific mental health needs of unique populations will also be considered.

NPCE3040 Health Care Delivery to the Child and Parent Unit

The course examines the complexity of delivering developmentally approved health care to the child and parent unit. The development stages of children will be discussed. The challenges of administering health care to children and their parents are also addressed.
