Mindy has faced many obstacles in pursuing her college education. As a child she faced challenges that hindered her self-esteem and preparation for college. She attended community college with hesitation and then became a single parent. “School would have to be squeezed in between two full-time jobs: one as a mother, and one to support myself and my daughter financially. I did manage to attend classes intermittently over the years while working and raising a family, eventually completing 52 units,” Mindy shares.
When Mindy envisions her future with a degree she envisions a world of opportunity. “I have always tried to convey to my children that a college education is the key to unlocking a world of their own making. I believe a good education teaches you how to think, rather than what to think. Once you earn a degree, it is yours forever. You can lose a job, but you can never lose an education. It is the enemy of ignorance and the friend of opportunity.” Mindy has proven through a track record of perseverance and dedication that she is a great candidate for the Focus to the FinishSM scholarship. University of Phoenix’s flexible scheduling, real-world instructors and applicable course work complements Mindy’s busy and full life. She has the support of the University and her family to finally finish the degree she started many years ago.
