Raphael L.
Degree: Master of Arts in Education/Administration
Hometown: Phoenix, AZ
Raphael earned his Bachelor’s of Talmudic Law from Ner Israel Rabbinical College in 1992. Following in his parents’ footsteps, he enrolled in a master’s program in education. “Both of my parents were educators, and both obtained masters’ degrees in education. Although I did not think I myself would enter the field, life has taken me to found an all-girls high school in Phoenix created to service the observant Jewish community,” shares Raphael. He had worked with teens in the community for seven years when a group of parents asked him to head a school for the girls that mirrored their religious beliefs. Raphael finished two courses in his master’s programs when a tuition hike made it impossible to continue. He has tried to compensate by reading books on education but it is not the same as formal coursework. Plus, his school has applied for accreditation and would be greatly helped along with his master’s degree.
“A scholarship for me is not just an investment in my future, but a gift to all of the students in our school, one that would pay immediate dividends,” explains Raphael. He says he’ll use his organizational skills and time management to complete his degree while upholding his obligations to his school and family. They will be graduating their first graduating class this spring.
