Alumna - Vail, Arizona
With a master's degree in hand from University of Phoenix, Cachandra fulfilled her promise to her mother to earn an advanced degree. As a previous scholarship recipient herself, Cachandra understands the value and opportunity that it can provide and was thrilled to be able to nominate her friend and co-worker Bernita McDougal for the Paying It ForwardSM Scholarship. Cachandra believes that her degree has provided her with more confidence and increased her marketability to potential clients and employers, and she wanted the same for Bernita. Cachandra recently secured a new position with increased responsibility as a systems analyst for a major defense contractor—an employment area in which there are few women. She believes her degree has made a positive difference in both her professional and personal life.
Recipient - Chesapeake, Virginia
Bernita always dreamed of earning her college degree, but her military service in the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years took priority. After retiring from the military, Bernita knew that she needed to build a future for her daughter, Tarsha. With a gift for baking, her true desire is to become an entrepreneur and develop her own “home-style bakery” business. Bernita currently gives back to her community of Chesapeake and the surrounding Norfolk area through her baking skills and volunteering to feed the homeless, as well as working with the Meals on Wheels program. Bernita believes a dual degree in business management and hospitality from University of Phoenix will open the door to her bakery dream, and the rest of her life—as they say—will be icing on the cake.
