Paying it Forward - 2010 Profiles

Julie Anderson Clark

Alumni - Provo, Utah
In 1973, Julie earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She opened a preschool in 1983 to give her daughter a place to learn and socialize before starting kindergarten. Since then Julie has taught hundreds of students and was chosen to be a 2002 Olympic Torchbearer for her efforts in the community.

Julie always dreamed of returning to school for her master’s but it was hard for her to find a program that fit her busy schedule. Finally in 1997, she was able to return to school and she completed her master’s. “For me, it was a dream come true – for thirty years I had wanted to teach Children’s Literature and now it was my chance. My University of Phoenix degree opened the door for me and has set an example for my children to follow!” Julie wants to pay forward her education to her daughter Tricialee. Tricialee has always believed in her mom; she submitted Julie’s nomination to be a torchbearer. Julie wants to honor her daughter for always honoring her.

Tricialee Clark

Recipient - Provo, Utah
Julie nominated her daughter Tricialee for the Paying it Forward® scholarship because she embodies the mission of the University. “She is a perfect nominee because she reflects the mission of University of Phoenix – someone who has walked the talk and is currently trying to make a difference,” says Julie. Tricialee attended college after high school but she ran into financial hardship. She returned home and took a retail job where she excelled but her dream was to become a nurse. At the age of 24, she enrolled in a nursing program and was set to graduate when she could not secure an internship. “She completed the classroom program with honors but when it came time for the internships she found that the college did not have enough sites for their graduates to complete the program. This, of course, was very discouraging and once again, she found herself in need of employment – now to pay off a loan that did not give her a degree,” explains Julie. Since then she has secured a job in the medical field but she wants and needs to finish her degree. Tricialee is raising a child of her own and wants to provide for him completely. Thanks to the Paying it Forward® scholarship program Tricialee will finally be able to complete her nursing degree.
