Paying it Forward - 2011 Profiles

Heidi M.

Alumna

Having a University of Phoenix education has opened many doors for Heidi. She has grown personally and professionally because of her education. She no longer judges people by first impression and has learned to work with diverse teams. She has overcome obstacles through hard work and dedication. Heidi is passionate about volunteering and is active with Hispanic female youth (MANA), the San Diego Police Department and Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Heidi is honored to nominate her younger sister, Marilyn Mendez, who has experienced many life challenges as well, for a Paying it Forward® Scholarship to help change Marilyn’s life just as education has changed Heidi’s life for the better.

Marilyn M.

Recipient – Chula Vista, CA

As a training officer, Marilyn is responsible for training new deputies and conducting quarterly and annual trainings for the entire sheriff’s department. She is a youth mentor and an active volunteer and fundraiser in her community. Marilyn’s dream of completing her college education was put on hold following her divorce. She was able to finish her associate degree, but her goal of completing her bachelor’s degree has eluded her for many years. Because of her sister’s nomination for the Paying it Forward Scholarship, Marilyn will achieve her dream of completing her bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
