Darralyn J.

Institutional Scholarship Recipient

Major: Bachelors of Science in Business Administration
Anticipated Graduation Date:
2012
Hometown:
Austin, TX

“There is no greater motivation than denial,” says Darralyn. For years, she ignored the degree requirements for her dream jobs and would apply in hopes the recruiters would overlook her missing diploma. Time and time again she was denied the chance to prove herself. Throughout her twenties, she thought “their loss” but she soon realized it was her loss in not having a degree.

University of Phoenix is a good fit for Darralyn. The schedule is flexible and her academic counselor helps her navigate the waters of her busy life and fit in some quality time for school. She says, “At the age of 41 I have a number of constants already established in my life. I like being able to look over the next few months and with the aid of my (awesome) academic counselor plan my classes in conjunction with those things that are already established.”

Darralyn cannot wait to cross off “Bachelor of Science in Business Administration” from her twenty-year to-do list. Her degree will bring her that much closer to landing her dream job–event coordinator at her city’s convention center. She says, “By obtaining that position, I can continue to serve the citizens of my community while utilizing the natural abilities I have of planning and organizing. This degree will provide the necessary knowledge that I will need to excel in the hospitality management field.” She also wants to make two very special women in her life proud: her mother and grandmother. Darralyn cheers with enthusiasm, “I AM A PHOENIX!”
