Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner

San Jacinto, CA

Scholarship: Hemet Valley Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship

How did you find the scholarship you received? What steps did you take?

The Hemet Valley Hospital Auxiliary awards scholarships to hospital employees pursuing advanced education and to area students choosing a career in the medical profession. I had to write an essay regarding "Personal Statement of My Interest in the Health Care Field" and submit two letters of recommendation — one from my clinical manager and one from a co-worker.

What are your educational and professional goals? How did your scholarship help you accomplish those goals?

Now that I have my Master of Science in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner, I want to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice. It is my hope that one day I will be able to open a wellness clinic where families in my community can obtain relevant and timely information on health, nutrition and a balanced lifestyl

The scholarship I received helped me to pay for my tuition and school expenses. It assisted me in completing another step in making my dreams come true.

What did you like most about your degree program?

University of Phoenix has molded me and other students in the MSN/FNP program to be collaborative and culturally aware as we help determine and treat the primary care needs of many individuals spanning all age groups across a variety of health care settings. The classes focused on application of knowledge and development of critical thinking and decision-making.

On the other hand, the clinical practice provided us practical experience in a range of community and primary care settings in collaboration with nurse practitioners, physicians and other health professionals. The instructors are excellent role models and are very knowledgeable, with many years of experience to share that provided helpful guidance.

What skills did you develop while attending University of Phoenix?

It is my fervent belief that taking up the MSN/FNP program at the University, I will be of service to people who are in need of my skills. I have learned how to be hardworking and committed — two great values I intend to contribute back to my community. My 14 years as a registered nurse are proof of my dedication to the field. With my degree and life experiences, I believe I am prepared to face anything that comes my way.
