Meet alumnus Stanley Harris,

EDD/CL '12

Stanley Harris was enjoying a successful career as a nurse manager at a hospital when he decided the time was right to pursue another passion: teaching. Though he already had a master’s degree, he knew he needed to continue his education to reach his professional goals. "I knew if I wanted to work in academia, I was going to have to have a doctoral degree," Harris explains.

“When I started to write different assignments and get feedback from my instructors and student cohorts, it really boosted my confidence. They were all so supportive." – Stanley Harris, EDD/CL '12

Overcoming his concerns

Harris set focus on his program, turning to his University of Phoenix academic advisor to guide him through the process of online learning. “During the first couple of weeks, I must have talked to her 20 times,” he says. “When I started to write different assignments and get feedback from my instructors and student cohorts, it really boosted my confidence. They were all so supportive.”

Next goal: Dean of Nursing

Today, Harris serves as interim chair for the Department of Nursing at South Carolina State University. And he already has his eye on his next challenge: “My goal is to become a dean at a major college or school of nursing,” he says.
