This course addresses addiction concepts and counseling practices. Topics include an overview of dependency theories, major substances of abuse, assessment, diagnosis, treatment modalities, special topics, and working with diverse populations.

- Distinguish the special needs of diverse groups, various ethnicities, and special populations in the prevention, assessment, intervention, treatment, and relapse prevention of substance abuse and addiction.
- Describe the role of health care providers, business, schools, and organizations in the prevention, assessment, intervention, treatment, and relapse prevention of substance abuse and addiction.
- Understand effective strategies to support client advocacy and influence public policy that affect the practice of substance abuse counseling.
- Analyze the ethical and legal issues in substance abuse counseling.
Process of Addiction: Etiology, Stages, Models, and Risk Factors
- Examine the historical use of substances throughout humankind and how this impacts attitudes and approaches to addiction and treatment today.
- Analyze the etiological theories of substance abuse.
- Define and differentiate between substance use, misuse, abuse, dependency disorders, and addiction.
- Recognize the similarities and differences between alcohol or drug addictions and other forms of nondrug addictions and dependencies.
Assessment and Diagnosis
- Identify standard screening and assessment instruments for substance-use disorders and process addictions.
- Identify the DSM-IV-TR classifications related to substance abuse and dependency and discuss the limitations of the DSM-IV-TR classification system.
- Describe the range of DSM-IV-TR disorders that commonly co-occur with substance abuse and dependence.
- Discuss the effects of co-occurring disorders on the assessment and treatment of substance abuse and dependence.
Impact of Substance Abuse and Addiction
- Identify and describe the biological and pharmacological effects of substances.
- Identify and describe the impact of substance abuse and addiction on the individual.

Intervention and Treatment: Settings, Planning, and Strategies
- Differentiate between treatments at in-patient versus out-patient settings.
- Compare and contrast clinical treatment strategies, including individual, group, and family methods.
- Discuss the history and the importance of 12-step programs in the treatment of substance abuse and dependency.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of alternatives to the 12-step model of treatment.
