Course level: Graduate

This course is an overview of supervision and management as they relate to the practice of counseling. Models of supervision and counselor development, supervision and management processes, assessment and evaluation issues, and ethical and legal aspects of supervision are emphasized. Students explore their skills in management, supervision, and and consultation, particularly as they relate to recent changes in the mental health care delivery system. Students residing in Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New Hampshire or Nevada and individuals who live outside the United States are not eligible to enroll in this course.


  • This graduate level course requires proof of completion of a graduate degree in counseling or related field (e.g. Psychology, school counseling, school psychology, gerontology counseling, rehabilitative counseling).

  • Analyze the role of the clinical supervisor in counselor development.
  • Apply ethical codes and legal statutes in a clinical supervision scenario.

Week 2

  • Determine essential characteristics of an effective supervisor.
  • Describe the different functions of the supervisor in clinical supervision.
  • Synthesize a positive supervision relationship.

Week 3

  • Analyze the efficacy of different models of counseling supervision.
  • Examine the appropriateness of different models of supervision based on different supervisory needs.

Week 4

  • Analyze the strengths and limitations of model-specific supervisory interventions.
  • Determine a personal supervision model.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate use of key supervisory intervention skills.

Week 5

  • Apply consultation models through consulting on clinical supervision.
  • Determine the supervision needs of a supervisee.
  • Demonstrate appropriate administrative and managerial procedures in clinical supervision.

Week 6

  • Demonstrate an integrated understanding of clinical supervision models, processes, procedures, and interventions.
  • Demonstrate evaluation skills relative to clinical supervision.
