Multicultural Strategies for the Adult Learner

Course level: EDU Graduate

In this course, learners acquire a rich and deep framework to understand what diversity means in the workplace, in the training and development environment, and in the higher education classroom. Learners explore dimensions of diversity which include race, gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, education, and socioeconomic status. Learners acquire an awareness of diversity and understand how to design, deliver, and evaluate training and education programs that are sensitive to the challenges and opportunities that a multicultural context presents. This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Arkansas and Kentucky.

Prerequisites

This graduate level course requires proof of completion of a Bachelor's degree. Be prepared to provide documentation during the checkout process.

Week 1

  • Differentiate the fundamental characteristics of diversity.
  • Recognize secondary characteristics of diversity that can change (e.g., educational background, geographic location, income, marital status, parental status, religious beliefs, and work experiences).
  • Evaluate the effect of globalization on adult learners.
  • Describe the challenges and opportunities of diversity and multiculturalism in adult education and training.

Week 2

  • Outline the history of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States to understand the intersection between law and diversity initiatives.
  • Evaluate the difference between compliance, awareness, and advocacy for minority populations.
  • Analyze types of regulations and policies that affect facilitation of instruction for diverse adult learners.
  • Evaluate the Americans with Disabilities Act and its implications for the adult learning environment.

Week 3

  • Explain culture and its influences on adult learners.
  • Identify strategies for creating an inclusive multicultural learning environment.
  • Evaluate differentiated instruction as an effective means of facilitating learning.

Week 4

  • Debate the need for an adult educator to be sensitive to issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.
  • Analyze the opportunities and challenges that face each sub-population of multiculturalism in the adult learning environment.
  • Determine learning environmental strategies that are welcoming to race, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.

Week 5

  • Contrast the different types of accommodations for learners with disabilities.
  • Explain the impact of technology on adult learners.
  • Identify learning styles and generational characteristics of adult learners.
  • Analyze characteristics of effective facilitators for diverse learners.

Week 6

  • Analyze the effect of transformational learning in relationship to diversity planning for organizations.
  • Differentiate the relationship between organizational diversity management skills and diversity maturity.
  • Identify best diversity management practices and strategies for the achievement of organizational goals.

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process.

To meet a course prerequisite requirement, a student must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Successfully completed the prerequisites course at University of Phoenix

  • Provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution.

  • Have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
