This course examines research on the basic relationships between behavior and health, including stress, eating and obesity, substance abuse, and chronic illness such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and HIV-AIDS. Students will learn the major concepts of illness prevention and health promotion, with a focus on both personal behavioral factors and sociocultural determinants. Special attention will be given to the disparities in health status and prevention efforts with regard to race, gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status.

    Stress, Health, and Sleep

    • Analyze the differences between sleep deprivation and stress-related insomnia.
    • Explain how the concepts of hardiness, self-efficacy, and optimism influence stress management and coping.
    • Differentiate between the absence of illness and thriving.
    • Explain the effects of prolonged stress on the mind and body.
    • Describe the effects of sleep deprivation on physical and mental health.

    Addictive Behavior and Health

    • Evaluate the physical and psychological effects of smoking.
    • Compare the genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors that contribute to abuse and dependence on alcohol and other drugs.
    • Describe the physical consequences of the use and abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

    Obesity, Disordered Eating, and Exercise

    • Describe the genetic, environmental, psychosocial, and sociocultural factors that contribute to obesity.
    • Explain the current and future diagnostic criteria for eating disorders.
    • Analyze the value of physical exercise and activity on physical and mental health.

    Chronic Pain and Pain Behavior

    • Compare the physiological and psychosocial aspects of acute and chronic pain.
    • Evaluate methods to measure pain.
    • Differentiate between pain, suffering, and pain behavior.
    • Explain the effects of anxiety and depression on chronic pain.

    Cardiovascular and Metabolic Health

    • Describe the major components and risk factors of cardiovascular disease.
    • Evaluate the research on the effects of positivity and optimism on cardiovascular disease.
    • Explain the origins and progression of metabolic syndrome.
    • Recommend strategies to reduce the effects of psychosocial risk factors in cardiovascular disease for Type A and Type B personalities.

    Cancer, HIV/AIDS, and Psychoneuroimmunology

    • Describe the various types of cancer.
    • Compare the medical and psychosocial interventions for coping with cancer.
    • Describe the history, epidemiology, and transmission of HIV/AIDS.
    • Evaluate the influence of psychosocial factors on cancer and HIV/AIDS.
    • Compare the immune surveillance theory with the biphasic model in psychoneuroimmunology.
    • Compare the various risk factors for two different types of cancer.
