Counseling Internship is a 600-hour clinical experience required of all Master of Counseling students. Divided into 300 hour sections, each lasting 15 weeks, SCHC/597 A and B comprise Portfolio III of the counseling portfolio series. Students work in a K-12 school setting for 20-30 hours per week where they provide school counseling services under the direction and supervision of an approved school counselor.

    Orientation to Internship

    • Use leadership skills to manage a school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social needs of students.
    • Use accountability strategies to evaluate and improve the school counseling program.
    • Promote equity and achievement by providing direct and indirect student services.
    • Use various school counseling assessments and tools to manage the program and ensure unique student needs are met.
    • Demonstrate effective written and verbal skills necessary for collaborating with school administration and staff, student, parents, community agencies, and school board members.
    • Evaluate the program foundation to ensure it includes inclusive program focus, developmental student competencies, and ASCA school counselor competencies.
    • Promote systemic change that promotes equitable treatment of all students through administration of a developmental school counseling program.
    • Coordinate student support through collaboration with school, family, and community resources.
    • Advocate for student success from the micro-level to the macro-level through the school counseling program.
    • Adhere to the ASCA’s ethical Standards for School Counselors.
    • Collect and analyze multiple data sources within the school.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the concept of Professional Identity and Professional Dispositions as a school counselor.
    • Apply state curriculum requirements for school counseling.
