Course level: Upper Division

This course addresses the fundamentals of network design and analysis with an emphasis on business network needs. The network design techniques necessary for Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) implementations are covered. The concept of service levels, the provisioning of and importance of service levels are analyzed.

  • Explain the importance and purpose of service level agreements and why these levels must be adequate for networking services.

  • Identify wired and fiber cable types and their advantages and disadvantages.
  • Describe how wireless LANS operate and provide advantages and disadvantages for business network use.
  • Identify communication protocols for wired and wireless networks and explain the best use of each.

  • Recognize how data networks operate efficiently utilizing packet switching, circuit switching and other networking technology.
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of satellite communications.
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing in support of business functions.
