What you'll study

The mission of the Bachelor of Science in Security Management degree program is to develop security professionals through academically preparing students from diverse backgrounds for positions as security leaders, managers, supervisors and administrative staff by addressing an increasing national and international need for the application of comprehensive theoretical and technical competence, and professionalism in the security industry. Students participating in this program will integrate core instruction in security management relating to this multifaceted industry for the security of the infrastructures critical to each individual, organization and government agency—including communication networks, transportation and utility delivery systems, financial transactions, intellectual property, the protection and integrity of products and global supply chains, and homeland security programs.

The degree program is intended to develop the critical-thinking, creative decision-making and management capabilities of security practitioners that will enable professional success. Specifically, the program prepares graduates to be able to identify and describe key components of business operations and continuity, client relations, and corporate security management methodologies. Students will be able to identify corporate investigative techniques, applicable laws and regulations, investigative interviewing methodologies, evidence collection procedures, preparation of reports and investigation case management. The program provides students with the skills to design, direct, manage and apply threat assessment and risk analysis, as well as manage critical incident response to natural and manmade catastrophic events. Upon completion of the degree program, students will have the critical-thinking and decision-making skills to effectively solve ethical situations related to personnel management in the security industry.

This undergraduate degree program includes 39 credits in the required course of study and 18 credits in the certificate area. Some courses have prerequisites. In addition, students must satisfy general education and elective requirements to meet the 120-credit minimum.

The mission of the Critical Incident Response Certificate is to academically prepare students from diverse backgrounds for positions as security practitioners. Students participating in the program will receive core instruction that is aligned to security industry standards relating to security management fundamentals, physical security, personal security and executive protection, global security issues, terrorism and critical incident management.

Note: The diploma awarded for this program will read as Bachelor of Science in Security Management and will not reflect the en-route certificate or ASIS certificates. Certificates are reflected on the transcript.
