I just wanna jump right in.

Let's start with how it all started, where it all began.

Tell us about your childhood and where you came from.

- Okay, so evidently I was born in Cuba

and since my early memories began,

and I can recall, I lived under the communist system

of Del Castro and his brother.

As a little girl, I was nurtured by my parents.

I had great parents, but also we had great scarcity and,

but we never lack love and we never lack companionship.

Remember myself going to school in my very early years

and wearing the uniform that you have to wear to go

to school 'cause it was mandatory

and wearing the, the hat for,
2:30
they're called it pioneers.

It's like these are like young people who are part

of the revolution, part of the system.

People, young people who are being formed under the system.
2:41
So being formed was kind of like brainwashed.

So in my early years, I, I was, I was,
2:50
I, I was a fervent believer

because it was 5, 6, 7 that everything that it was
2:57
provided to me in the school

and the ideology was perfect.

I, I was talking before I spoke to you

and I mentioned the war in Vietnam, for example,
3:12
let me give you a concrete example.

I was probably, I was born in 1965, so I,
3:18
in my school years, I remember clearly, you know, going,
3:22
the war was started.

The word, the word was there.
3:25
And I remember clearly singing
3:29
or saying phrases like Yankees, go home, things like that.
3:34
Because that's what the training that we got
3:38
as a little girl.

I, and throughout my schooling, I remember
3:44
the prohibition of books, for example, something
3:47
that I cherish.
3:48
I love reading. And so I was only,
3:53
when I was a little girl, I didn't know
3:54
that there was a prohibition of books per se.
3:58
But I would read stories and story and stories.

And as I grew up and I became a woman

and I started thinking of my own through college,
4:06
we were not allowed to read
4:08
any other philosophy that it was not marks
4:13
and engles and, and, and new Lenny.

So it was the communist thing.

So basically my schooling was in that context,

a lot of prohibition.

I was angry. And one
4:27
of the reason why is I think it was angry is
4:29
because I was not allowed to express myself.

There was an, an organization that,

it was the youth communist of Cuba,
4:39
that's what it was called.

And once you were a certain age,
4:43
you start teenagehood you were considered
4:46
to, to be part of it.
4:49
And I never wanted to be part of it. So they questioned me.

Why is it that you don't wanna be part of it?

I don't wanna be part of it.

I I, I, I was so angry, I,
4:59
I couldn't explain myself exactly why.

But there was something amiss.

For example, you could not question a member of
5:07
that, of that group.
5:09
You as a student, if you complain about a member of
5:12
that group, you were sanctioned, you were dismissed.

You were, you were actually scolded
5:20
for questioning a member of that group,
5:23
especially if you were an outsider.
5:26
So I was so angry.

I was so angry at the, at the things that they did
5:29
and that, that were, that were overlooked.

And I just simply started growing angrier

and angrier in my early years.

And that's how my, my child,

I remember my mother struggling in many ways.

And there is a story, and I don't know if I'm jumping ahead,

but there is a story when I was a little girl,

maybe, I don't know, seven, eight, maybe maximum eight,
5:59
which I remember clearly

because mom was born before 1959.

So right now she's 84 years old.

My mother was young at that time.
6:10
I was a little girl and I used to run around
6:15
with friends in the house and that kind of thing.

So I went into my mother's bedroom
6:20
and I remember my mother having a picture
6:25
behind the clothes, you know, you know the closet
6:29
and then you have your clothes
6:30
and behind the, the clothes, there was a picture.
6:33
And I was, I never asked my mother that question.

For some reason that day I asked my mother, mom, who's that?

Because my mother had the, the, the clothes slightly apart.

My mother got so angry at me. I could not fathom.
6:50
I think, I don't know my face at that moment,
6:52
but I could not fathom why my mother got so angry at me.
6:55
And the reason why my mother got angry at me is
6:58
because it was the picture of the Christ.

So I always, when I talk to people about that, I said, mom,

do you remember the man, the man in the closet?
7:06
Because that's my mother would not allow me to talk about it
7:10
because he was forbidden.

One of the consequences could be either from jail to,
7:17
to not being able to go to school.
7:19
They, they would not allow you to go to school. And
7:22
- So, lemme make sure that I understand you.

Your mother wanted to pray to Christ.

She had a photo behind in the, in the back of the closet

behind clothes because she wasn't allowed,
7:36
no one was allowed to practice religion.

- Correct. At that time, religion was a sin.

As a matter of fact, I overheard a stories
7:47
that in 1959

and through the 1960s, there was a major flee of Cuban
7:54
priest who came to Miami
7:58
accompanying children whose parents told them to take him

with them to be able to save him from communism.

That's what I heard.

And I think that, that, that exodus was called Peter Pan.

Peter Pan because there were children
8:15
that were accompanied by Christ.
8:17
It was in the 1960s, somehow along those lines.

So my, my exodus was called sea signal.

So there, there being different exodus throughout time.

So most definitely, I remember my mother, and,

and I remembered this
8:32
because my mother is not an angry person.
8:35
She's very calm, very sweet.

And, and, and, and reaction really was very,
8:42
very angry reaction and really ed me.

And when I asked her, I said, don't you ever,
8:48
ever talk about this with your friends, you know,

I can't go to jail.

So the fear was immense. I was never raised in religion.

My mother is very religious.

My mother prayed every day in secret.

She never instilled that

until I discovered God on my own when I was older.

But, but it, it, that was a very,

it was a very marked moment of my, my childhood.

Seeing your parents so angry for something

that you don't understand.

And so later on I underst clearly understood.

I was just fearful
9:26
that some my friends would see that picture.

So I always hid it.

And I remember an incident, this is funny,

but it's also tragic.

My mother, in her devotion for praying

and the Catholic church

and the things
9:43
that she was raised when she was a young woman
9:46
before the revolution, she licked a candle in the closet,
9:50
you know, for Virgin Mary, those kind of things.

And the clothes got fire on fire.

But yeah, th those things I remember,

'cause she had to hide everything.

She had to hide the candles, the candles.

Unless there was no electricity,

why would you have a candle burning, you know,

with a picture of the Christ so, or,
10:09
or a virgin or things like that.

So,

But she kept that from you

because she wanted to keep you safe.

- And my sister, both of us,

she would never talk about God.

I didn't know that there was a God

in existence, nothing like that.

It was, it was just a, a life of

not religion, no books that I wanted to read.

Nothing like that.

- So your, your mother sounds like, now I heard you say

that she's calm and sweet

and it sounds like she was being very protective

of you and your sisters.

And throughout your story there's so much passion

and drive, it's inspirational.

I'm curious, who was your inspiration growing up

that helped put that fire in you?

- My mother, my mother and my father. Both of them.

My father would utter phrases like this about honesty
11:09
and about transparency.
11:11
He was from another generation where that was valued
11:16
and lying
11:19
and things like that were not my father's character,
11:22
his discipline.

My father was so disciplined, I remember,
11:28
but my father had no education.
11:30
My father grew up in a farm with my grandpa,
11:33
and the only thing
11:34
that he did was help my grandpa since he was a little child,
11:38
you know, milk the cows, that kind of stuff.
11:42
But he always had this thirst for knowledge.
11:46
And he would read, he would read history books, the ones
11:49
that were allowed to read.
11:50
And, you know, the, for example that was allowed,
11:54
the maes was like the, the troops
11:57
or the army that rebel against the Spanish conquerors
12:02
who came to Cuba during the Independence War,
12:05
the 10 years Independence war.
12:06
So they, they're called the Maes
12:08
because they are a mix of maes.
12:11
They were a mix of native Cubans and Spaniards.
12:16
So pretty much like, like here, you know, when the,
12:20
when the United States and England got mixed together.
12:23
And so there were people who were,
12:26
the parents were from England,
12:27
but they were born in the country here in the United States.

So it's, they call him Abi, it's a group of,
12:34
it's an army actually.
12:35
It's an army that rebel against this.
12:38
So my father liked those, the stories.
12:40
And he read about history
12:43
and he had, he had discs
12:50
and he would listen to those discs.
12:51
The disks were before the revolution.
12:54
He was trying to learn English.
12:57
He was trying to learn English.
12:58
And I will hear my father repeat the words.

And I said, this is, this is nice.

I wanna learn that he cherished those discs.

They were very, very old because it was
13:08
before the revolution.

And it's just, it was amazing to see him,

you know, trying to learn.

So my father was definitely, my,
13:17
my mother was more like, you know, sweet and protected.

He was protective too,
13:22
but he was like, you have to go to school.
13:25
You have to, you have to.
13:26
So he instilled all of that kind of stuff on me.

And so we, they were very careful

by not revealing their thoughts about
13:37
that I was able to get into school.

Because otherwise, if they found out that my mother
13:41
or father had any kind of ideas against the system,
13:45
I could not go to universities.
13:47
So that's why you have to leave a lie. You have to leave it.

And that makes you angry. What,
13:53
- And your, your father was so against lying,
13:56
- He was very against it.
13:59
But he, he could not do any other thing.

If he had revealed his true self,
14:05
he would've been in deep trouble.

He would've lost his job.

You know, that there were people who expressed a desire
14:12
to leave the country and they were sent to work fields.

- 'cause they expressed a desire to leave.

- Yes, yes. For years and years and years.

And if they received a visa, you know, they, they left,
14:28
but they were everything that they had their houses,
14:32
they went in and conducted inventory, the smallest thing,
14:36
like a plate, they counted it.
14:38
None of it you could take with you.
14:41
People will smuggle like, you know, golden
14:45
jewelry and things like that.
14:47
And sometimes when they were found with it, they had
14:50
to actually give some to the guards to let them go
14:54
because they will retain them.
14:56
I hear all of those stories, you know, and I, and I, and,

and now that I'm older, this is ridiculous.

But, and this is something
15:04
that doesn't happen in the United States.
15:06
So lemme tell you something.

One of them moments where I realized
15:11
that I was in a different place
15:13
was when I actually heard people,
15:16
Clinton was the president when I entered the country.
15:19
When I heard people talking bad about the president,
15:22
I was like, are they crazy?
15:25
They shouldn't do that. Oh my God.
15:26
They're go and people talk really about the president.
15:31
And that was like an aha moment.

Another aha moment for me was when I came here
15:39
and I started working in the school
15:41
for the first time in the US in 1997 in Arizona,
15:46
the Pledge of Allegiance, I'll get goosebumps
15:51
because there was God in it and I was wow.

Freedom. So I was so happy.

You know, those, those are probably for you guys

who were born here, who were raised here, that mean
16:06
that means nothing.

But up to this day when people, or, or the,
16:10
or the American anthem,
16:14
when people sing the American anthem
16:16
or ledge allegiance to the flag, I still get that emotion.

I get, I get that, wow, this is something
16:24
that I could never experience in my country, this freedom.

And so it's just, it was just an amazing experience to come

to the greatest country.

It's the greatest country in the world.

I don't care what people say and experience all of that.

Being able to study and be myself

and getting to travel by saying something
16:45
and discussing things with people in a, in a,
16:49
in a civil way without being put
16:52
to jail or things like that.

- Right? I could definitely understand how you can feel

that way coming from Cuba where you literally had
16:59
to lie about who you were and what you to do.

So I could definitely understand you being taken back by
17:07
the experiences that we have here in America.

And I have to partner with you in saying,

I get the same chills every time.

I, I hear the anthem and, and the Pledge of Allegiance

because I am an army brat and a marine brat.

So married brat.
17:20
My, my family fought for, fought for the freedoms
17:23
of America.
17:25
So I get, I, I feel so mu, so much great honor to be able

to, to be here knowing that so many men
17:32
and women died for my freedom and sacrificed.

- Absolutely. Absolutely.

And I absolute the great generation

and all of the generations after that, and the generation

before that, who fought for the freedom

that we have in this country.

I say we, I'm an American.

In 2005, I visited Cuba

because my father died of lung cancer.

He suffering from the disease yet,
17:59
and I sre myself that I will never set food on that.

And I, not, I will not,

it's a beautiful island,
18:08
but it's not a beautiful government.

And, and so I have not,
18:13
I have no ti the only my mother is there,
18:16
but I don't have, my mother has visited several times,
18:20
but I don't have any other ties that my mother, my,
18:23
I have my entire family's there with me.

Here are my children and well my ex-husband and my dogs.

But other than that, I do not feel, I do feel
18:33
that I am Cuban because I was born there.
18:36
But that was not the country that granted me the freedom
18:39
that I needed to become who I'm, I always say
18:42
that it is only under freedom that you can be everything
18:46
that you can, otherwise you're holding back
18:48
because you cannot express yourself.

And that's the same thing with art.

If somebody regulates your art
18:54
or regulates your, your brain, you cannot be free.

You cannot express,
18:58
you cannot preach your pinnacle. And so I

- Completely agree. Let's talk about

- You escaping Cuba,

because that story is so inspirational

and you were so brave.

So take us through that story in that moment.

- So yeah, Las years, I accumulated all of that anger.

I wanted to read Socrates, I wanted to read all
19:22
of these Platos philosophers,

and I couldn't, I would hide magazines

that tourists will give me.
19:31
And I go, wow, look at this, look at that.

It's another world, right?
19:35
But anyways, when I reached, I was so angry.

My mother would tell me, you'll have to leave.
19:42
I'd rather have you leave than seeing you in a,
19:45
in a Cuban jail.
19:47
You know, Cuban jails. You have no human rights whatsoever.

But my father, when he found out
19:53
that we were building the raft, so my ex-husband
19:56
with a couple of friends decided, this is it.
19:59
I, I was pregnant and I said, this is it.

I cannot stay here.

I either go or I'll die,
20:05
but I'm not having a baby in this country.

And so my husband
20:10
and a couple of friends started building,

buying inner tube, inner tubes,

tractor inner tubes.

And they bought five, put 'em together,

tying them together.

But then they created a structure made of iron

to make like the skeleton outside in a form of a triangle.

And they accommodated those five inner tubes there tube

with a lot of styrofoam.

Styrofoam, you know, styrofoam, inner tubes,

but a lot of styrofoam.

And they time to get it together, welded this,

this skeleton in paddles,

paddles, paddles.

No engine, no nothing.

We thought it was gonna be, you know, okay, you know,
20:57
nothing would, I had no idea.

I really had no idea. I just, I was just wanted

to skate in my mind, I guess that you go like in a tra

when you, I mean, if that's the best way I can find

to describe it, when you are resolved to do something,
21:14
you just go, I'm gonna do this.

And, and I don't know how to explain the thinking process
21:19
or the psychology behind it,

but you do not see, at least I didn't see myself dying.

And if I saw myself dying, I didn't care. I wanted to leave.

And I remember thinking this, well, I'm pregnant,
21:33
my father is not happy.
21:35
He, he was crying, he kneeled in front of me.
21:38
I'm begging me not to leave.
21:40
And I said, dad, if I stay here,
21:44
I'm gonna die sooner than if I go in the ocean.

Because I was very vocal.
21:48
And my mother would go, stop, stop. You know?

And I, and I fell for my mother
21:52
and I also said, I cannot do this
21:54
anymore because I really will.

I was gonna go to a Cuban jail.
21:59
So when we decided to leave, I told dad,

dad said, okay, that's fine.
22:05
I will accept it. I'm gonna give you this canvas so

that you build your sale.

Because in the group that we came, there was a guy
22:13
who belonged to the Cuban sailing team.
22:17
So he knew how to, you know, maneuver
22:19
with sales and things like that.
22:21
So that's what we had a sale.
22:22
We built a sale, the raft and the paddles.
22:26
And it's funny, but it is not funny, I said, he said,
22:30
but the only thing that I want you to do,
22:32
he called me Juani, is that I, the day that you leave,
22:37
I want you to tell me where you are living from what area
22:41
of the coast, because we live very close to the ocean.
22:44
And I told her, no, we're gonna live in,
22:45
we're gonna live in, we're gonna be leaving from this point.
22:48
But no, I left from another point
22:51
because I didn't want my father to start crying,
22:55
or I knew my father was gonna be heartbroken.
22:57
And I didn't want those emotions to hold me

the moment when I was in.
23:02
So my father, I heard that when the next morning he came
23:05
and the raft was gone.
23:08
He just burst into tears. It was a disaster. Human disaster.

But then, okay, so going back to that, we built a raft.

We paid somebody with a truck,
23:19
about a hundred dollars in Cuba, a hundred dollars was a lot
23:22
of money back then.
23:25
And he transported us to the,
23:29
to the beach.
23:31
And so we ran and the, all these man ran like seven of them
23:35
and put the, the, the artifact on the, on the ocean.
23:39
So we walked and to like the water up to here,
23:44
and we just climbed in
23:45
and just started paddling,
23:46
paddling, paddling, paddling, paddle.
23:48
And we were, I don't know, paddling all night long.
23:52
We did see the Cuban Coast Guard go back and forth,
23:57
but from the distance.
23:58
So I don't know if they, I don't know, they didn't catch us.

So the night went by. That night wasn't so bad.

But the next day, around four,
24:11
five o'clock started raining.
24:15
And okay, we started
24:17
to see the waves getting a little bit crazy.

And at night it was just a, it was just a, a nightmare.

Like I was explaining, I explained to people
24:27
that I do remember a lot,

but I have lost a lot of memory of that
24:31
because it was such a bad storm.
24:34
I could see, I honestly, I don't know if it's in my, my,
24:37
in my, in my imagination,
24:39
but I could see, I still have the picture.

We were on a raft, right? All tied together.
24:44
Tried to hold it, hold on.
24:46
We couldn't paddle because that was,
24:47
we couldn't paddle because it was a storm.
24:50
So the wave, I would see a wave coming,
24:54
a real tall wave coming.
24:57
It was in the middle of the night.

And I don't know if the height,
25:03
but I would see that massive thing coming toward us.

And we'll go like this.

And then all of a sudden, and it was just scary.

It was scary. And that lasted all night long

until the next day.

The next day, I don't know where we were,

but in the, in the early wee hours of the morning,
25:28
the wee hours of the morning, I, we saw a, a plane
25:33
and it was not a plane from this, from Cuba.

It was a plane from the United States.
25:39
And how did you know that? I'm sorry?

- How did you know it was a plane from
25:43
the United States? Because
25:44
- There was people, because they threw a little parachute
25:46
with a message.
25:48
Did, you're not gonna believe this.
25:50
There was an organization that is called, that used
25:52
to be in Miami, that I was called
25:57
Cubans to the Rescue.
25:59
They were an organized group of Cubans who migrated
26:03
to the United States in similar conditions.
26:05
So before that. And they had a fleet of airplanes
26:08
and things to spot Cubans in that, in the Florida Strait.
26:12
And they spot us and they sent a little
26:16
parachute with something.
26:17
So they paddle and paddle and paddle and paddle.
26:20
And what we didn't know was,
26:23
and that was in that message that another huge amount
26:28
of Cubans had already left the same night, 30,000 according.
26:33
And so the US Coast Guard didn't have enough, you know,
26:36
were not organized enough, whatever, to rescue all of us.
26:39
So that was the message.
26:40
And they, the message said
26:42
that they had already us the coordinates
26:44
to the US Coast Guard to come and rescue us.
26:47
But guess what, three days passed, nothing.
26:51
We could see the light of the,
26:53
sometimes we could see the light of the Coast Guard green.

Have you seen the, when you're, when you are,

when you are at night in the street
27:02
and you see the green light, that, that intense green
27:05
or more, I dunno, because it was darker.
27:07
You could see the there. So on the third night,
27:10
after all of that ordeal, vomiting,
27:14
I was vomiting.

There was a nurse in the group
27:17
who said he had brought some medicines and IVs.

And he says, if you continue to vomit,
27:23
because I was pregnant, I am going to give you an iv.

And I looked at him 'cause I'm scared of needles.

And, and I remember looking at my husband's face
27:34
and I could see sadness in his eyes
27:36
and worried I could see that.
27:40
And I was, wow, this is just something terrible.

So at night there, it was very, very cold.

I was wet because of the waves
27:49
and the situation that I just narrated to you.

And we were all like a group of puppies together like that.

And we, we mean husband

and no husband friends, God, they was my cousin.

Everybody together like this.

And that's how, kind of like,

I guess we survive a little bit of the cold.

It is very cold. And especially if you're wet in the ocean.

So I was wearing a pair of shorts

and I lost my shoes in that storm.

I don't know where they went.

because I first came to Miami, my family received me.

to come to the United States.

my youngest, we just didn't have a baby.

Like we wanted to have another baby after Isaac, but Covid.

And so then, then all of a sudden,

one day I was really sick, I kept fainting.

I'll never forget, I walked out the garage

and I told my husband, I think you're gonna have to,

and I was trying to say catch me.

And luckily he was quick-witted and just caught me.

And I was, he said, we're gonna go to the hospital.

I said, no, just let me sleep it off.

I woke up and I couldn't see out of this eye.

And so they raced me to the hospital.

And I remember wanting to leave so badly,

I was in the emergency room

and I was like, pacing, I hate hospitals.

And my mom and uncle came, my mom works for the va

and my uncle's an rn and I just remember them like,

you know, getting them, like hurrying them along.

By the time I get into the room, I had to use the restroom

and I came out to open the door to look at my mom.

And the next thing I remember is

And come to find out my hemoglobin was at two,

So all that to say that happened

and then they gave me like three things of blood.

So we just have those two.

So I looked as a school district

and the waves are this high, you keep on looking

Cuba to Guantanamo Bay,

you were a student, now you're on the other side teaching.

What's the difference?

What is that like for you being, knowing

that you've had this experience all the way up

to your doctorate and now you're actually giving

back to the students?

What would you say the, the vast difference is?

- The really the, the, it's, it's, I mean, all

and in gratefulness, that's the only thing that I can say.

But it also, as a student, my,
1:19:24
I still view myself as a student.

I'm always in the shoes of a student, always.

Because once you lose those shoes, get out of the game

of teaching, you gotta wear those shoes in order

to be productive.

And you know that a doctor, no, Uhuh, you're a student.

Because not only you are teaching,

but you are learning from these people.

And every batch of students

that you get is different with different needs.

So what it's is, it has given me a tremendous sense

of empathy and a tremendous sense of pride.

Like, I accomplished this, and now I can give you, you know,

and I'm gonna give you, no matter what you give me,

my mission is to give you and move.

Can you imagine what it is to have somebody change his

or her life because you were there

for a fraction of five weeks,

- I mean, that person is gonna move into another course

and another course, and that person is gonna graduate

that person's financial situation.

Who knows where, where this past person is now,

and then five years from now

where this person is gonna be just

because you were there for a fraction of five weeks,

because this is the class that I'm

teaching is five weeks long.

- That, that has to be transformative for those people.

And I know that simply based off of your story,

And I, not only one, many, many,

my first Thanksgiving in the I I Cuba

doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving.

So the general at the time

of the base invited my husband

and myself to his place.

I was in a camp,
1:22:15
but he invited me to experience Thanksgiving.

People gave me those experiences. People are good.

Most of the people that we meet are really, really good.

And if you focus on that, they'll give you their good.

Now, if you focus on the bad,

the dark, they'll give you their dark.

We have a dark side.

But if you look again, focus on the light

that you find in people
1:22:39
and keep on trying to find that light.

And you'll see the light not only in people,
1:22:44
but the light that you need.
