    Ancient Rhetorics and the Kairos

    • Explain the beginnings of rhetoric.
    • Compare ancient rhetorics with modern rhetorics.
    • Explain the importance and value of kairos to modern rhetoric.

    The Commonplaces and Stases

    • Define stasis as it relates to rhetoric.
    • Identify the rhetorical situation in one’s own and others’ arguments.
    • Apply the use of stasis questions in building arguments.
    • Analyze the common topics and the commonplaces in modern American political debate.

    Logical, Ethical, and Pathetic Proof

    • Compare logical, ethical, and pathetic (emotional) proofs.
    • Differentiate invented ethos from situated ethos.

    Arrangement

    • Explain the relationship between the five kinds of cases and the arrangement a rhetor might choose.
    • Write a well-constructed exordium and introduction.
    • Apply the concepts of narration, partition, and confirmation in an argument.
    • Use refutation and peroration effectively in an argument.

    Style and Imitation

    • Analyze use of voice and rhetorical distance in an argument.
    • Paraphrase the works of authors, ancient or modern, into one’s own voice and idiom.
    • Explain the value of paraphrasing the works of ancient or modern authors in one’s own voice and idiom.
