Paying it Forward - 2009 Profiles
Alumnus - Patterson, California
Edward is on active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard. He worked on completing his bachelor’s degree since 2001 and finally graduated in 2008, the first in his immediate family to earn a college degree. While completing his degree he’s faced numerous relocations and supported a family of five.
Attending school amongst several challenges hasn’t always been easy but Edward is a true advocate of the University of Phoenix and the fact that you can earn a degree despite your other obligations. He is now up for promotion to Chief Warrant Officer for Finance and Supply for the U.S. Coast Guard – his goal since he started his program nine years ago. He ultimately wants to complete the Troops to Teachers program and teach business, economics, and finance at the high school level. Edward wants to pay forward a scholarship to his wife Andrea who has stood by his side all of these years.
Recipient - Patterson, California
Andrea has always put her husband and family first. She has started and stopped attending college over the last 12 years to relocate with her husband from base to base and raise their three children – two of which are autistic. She now works at an elementary school but strives to move up to a clerical position that requires a college degree. As Edward notes, she has taken on the role of mother and father while he has been deployed for a total of five years. Now they are in a position where Andrea can return to school but they lack the financial means to get her there. This scholarship will give Andrea the opportunity to finally complete her degree.
