Hiring Our Heroes partnership puts vets to work
Hiring Our Heroes is a national program created by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation that helps veterans and military spouses find civilian jobs through a variety of resources, including job fairs. University of Phoenix is the organization’s education partner.
“As a military-friendly school, we wanted to find a way for vets to translate their degrees to viable employment,” says Garland Williams, a retired U.S. Army colonel and associate regional vice president of the University of Phoenix Military Division. “Hiring Our Heroes is a perfect fit for that. We can bring in employers, showcase veterans’ talent — and sometimes get them hired on the spot.”
The University also supports Hiring Our Heroes’ efforts with its own Start Strong on-campus job fairs, and will sponsor Employment Workshops at 50 Hiring Our Heroes community-based events nationwide over the next year.
“We participate in the Hiring Our Heroes job fairs as a [potential] employer, rather than as an educational institution,” Williams explains, adding that the University hires veterans and military spouses for teaching, IT and other jobs in its administrative and corporate offices.
“We have an average of 300 open positions nationwide at any given time,” he notes.
“Our goal is to help open veterans’ eyes about what they want to do and where they want to go,” Williams emphasizes, explaining that representatives at the fairs also provide information to event attendees about the University’s complimentary Career Interest Profiler and Job Market Research Tool. “Hiring Our Heroes allows us to complete the circle — linking education to employment.”
