Center for Scholarship Excellence

Apply for College Scholarships

Mission Statement

The Center for Scholarship Excellence (CSE) is a department within University of Phoenix that is committed to providing financial support through institutional and external scholarship programs. The CSE encourages students to borrow responsibly as they work toward their educational goals.

Scholarship Types and Definitions

A scholarship is awarded to help pay the cost of a student’s education. Scholarships are not provided to all students. A limited number of scholarships are available. A student can obtain a scholarship by meeting the scholarship criteria, applying for the scholarship, and becoming the successful recipient. Depending on the number of other applicants, the process can be very competitive.

Scholarships, unlike student loans, do not need to be repaid. Students generally must start repaying their student loans six to nine months—depending on the type of loan— after they graduate or leave school.

Because scholarships can help to lessen a student’s financial burden, our Center for Scholarship Excellence provides resources to students to help them maximize their scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships are offered through two sources: institutional and external sources.

Education is at the heart of everything we do. As a leader in higher education, we have a unique opportunity to help students reach their academic goals through an array of scholarship programs.

Institutional scholarships are awarded by the University and are made available to prospective and current students as well as our alumni. We develop these scholarships by reaching out to our target communities to determine their individual needs. Once we’ve determined their needs, we partner with non-profits and other organizations in their area to provide scholarship opportunities that help alleviate financial obstacles to an education.

Together with these organizations, we determine eligibility criteria and select recipients. These scholarships are funded by University of Phoenix. Institutional scholarships are posted as they become available so check frequently for new opportunities.

One of the key missions of the University is to improve access to education. As a leader in higher education, we work to help our students make smart decisions about their educational expenses.

To help our students reduce their dependence on student loans, we promote external scholarship opportunities.

External scholarships are developed and funded by private organizations and are available to University of Phoenix students and the public. Depending on the external scholarship requirements, student eligibility may be need-based, merit-based or credit-based. Eligibility criteria, deadlines and recipient selection is determined externally.

To ensure the scholarship programs are a good match for our students, we first evaluate the opportunities, determine how they apply to our student population, and then communicate these opportunities to our students and campuses.

Research the possibilities.
