Legacy of Innovation
The first round of Baby Boomers was turning 30 and consumers were firing up first-generation Apple® computers in 1976 when University of Phoenix opened its doors. Dr. John Sperling, a Cambridge-educated economist and professor-turned-entrepreneur, saw an opportunity—and seized it—to cater to working adults seeking higher education.
Dr. Sperling pioneered ways of approaching curricular and program design, teaching methods and student services. The concept of making education accessible to busy, working adults by offering convenient class times at local sites caught on quickly. Before long, courses also became available across the United States, online, and on U.S. military bases over seas.
