University of Phoenix and University Medical Center Help Newborns in Need

First Annual Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need Campaign Collects Over 4,300 New Baby Items for El Paso's Families in Need

EL PASO , July 30, 2009 — On Thursday, July 30, 2009, staff members from the University of Phoenix El Paso campus delivered over 4,300 new baby items to University Medical Center that were collected as a result of the University's Open Your Hearts to Newborns in Need campaign held during the month of April. The much needed items will directly benefit the thousands of at-risk babies born to El Paso families each year. This inaugural year of the effort was sponsored by the University of Phoenix and will benefit the at-risk newborns and families served by University Medical Center.

With the fourth highest poverty rate in the nation, El Paso is home to thousands of babies lacking the basic necessities for a fair and healthy start on life. In an effort to provide these newborns and their families with a little extra support in times of need, University Medical Center and University of Phoenix came together with the El Paso community to collect new baby items to support this important effort. Throughout the month of April and into the summer months, charity baby showers hosted by individuals and local businesses, corporate drives and public donations supported the effort by collecting over 4,300 items.

"We would like to thank all of our sponsors, the community, the local media and all those who donated new baby items for the inaugural year of this effort," said Barbara Janowski. "We are honored to sponsor such a great cause and remain committed to helping El Paso's newborns and families in need for years to come."
