Doctoral Residency Requirements

Doctoral programs through the School of Advanced Studies are offered online. However, online learning is supported by credit-bearing residencies strategically placed throughout the learner's degree program. Held in select cities or countries, these face-to-face residencies offer unique opportunities to network on a global level and learn in person with other students and faculty members. For many learners, residencies are a highlight of their doctoral journey. They are enriching, rewarding experiences that transform their thinking, deepen their understanding and underscore the importance of lifelong learning.

An additional three days at the end of the third-year residency allows learners to take the live experiences gathered during the previous five-day residency and apply their expanded knowledge back to their research. During this portion of the year-three residency:

  • Learners will validate Chapters 1 through 3.
  • Learners will evaluate the fit between their proposal (chapter 1-3) and Chapters 4-5.
  • Learners will discuss the development of the Chapters 4 and 5.
  • Learners will understand the program timeline, including the approval process and the logistics of the oral defense.

A fourth residency is available to assist learners in completing their dissertations. This three-day residency allows learners to address their dissertation challenges and provides concentrated time with highly qualified faculty who can immediately address their questions and concerns.
