Our online IT degree at the bachelor’s level prepares you for roles in the growing IT industry, such as an information technology director, an information systems supervisor and an information technology manager. You can pair your tech degree with a certificate in a more specialized area and prepare for additional jobs, such as a software developer, computer security analyst, network technician, systems analyst or related IT role.

The main difference between a Bachelor of Science in IT and a Bachelor of Arts in IT is the focus of the program’s curriculum. Bachelor of Science degrees typically focus on courses that emphasize science and math. Alternatively, Bachelor of Arts degrees typically focus on courses rooted in the arts and humanities. Bachelor of Science degrees help you develop logic, reasoning and quantitative skills while Bachelor of Arts degrees focus on more soft skills like critical thinking, communication and holistic learning.

University of Phoenix does not offer a Bachelor of Arts in IT program.

While there are some similarities between a computer science degree and an information technology degree, the two are not the same. Our Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree is more ideal for students who want a more generalized foundation of IT knowledge. This program offers those who are unsure what path they want to pursue tailor their program to their specific needs or career aspirations. Our online IT program covers topics like networking, programming, cloud infrastructure, data analytics and cybersecurity. Students pursuing our tech degree can explore a range of electives and pursue relevant complementary certificates.

Our Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is geared more toward students who want a more thorough understanding of IT knowledge as it relates to theory and programming. Our computer science degree covers topics like software development, web design and computer analysis. This program typically suits students who want to analyze complex computing problems and creating computing-based solutions.

The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology degree prepares you to sit for industry certification exams for Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) and International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC Council). The exams include the CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) exam and the EC-Council Certified Secure Computer User (CSCU) exam.​ While our online IT degree prepares you to sit for these certification exams, you must take the exam and pass through the organization giving the exam.

Our bachelor’s in IT program covers in-demand skills sought by employers, which include business processes, cybersecurity, information systems, operations, systems analysis and more. Information technology is a field with industry certifications, which are different from the IT certificate programs offered by University of Phoenix.

An industry certification is earned by individuals who pass a standardized assessment that recognizes an individual’s knowledge, skill or competency in a particular specialty. University of Phoenix educationally prepares students to sit for select industry certification exams, but they must take the exam and pass through the company giving the exam like EC-Council.
