Meet Diana Cancel,

MBA '06

Diana Cancel worked as a human resources supervisor for more than three years before returning to school to complete her Master of Business Administration.  With working full time and being a wife and mother of two young children, Cancel was initially concerned about finding the time to juggle her academics with her already full plate.

Class structure and sizes mattered

“The reservations I had about returning to school dissipated once I started my classes at University of Phoenix," recalls Cancel. "Due to the unique format of the classes being one evening per week at the local campus, in addition to other time completing classwork, I was able to continue working and tend to my family while meeting the deadlines for class projects and assignments.”

Cancel was also pleased with the University’s class sizes. “The small class sizes allowed me the opportunity to ask questions and get the individualized attention I needed from my instructors. It also allowed me to work in teams with my peers,” she says.

Cancel feels that her hard work and determination certainly paid off. After working for three years as a human resources supervisor and after graduating with her MBA, she was promoted to a human resources manager within a year. Just over two years after becoming a manager, she was again promoted, this time to director of human resources.

Preparing for the future

Cancel attributes much of her career success to the fact that the degree programs at University of Phoenix have a practical application.

“My instructors were professionals in the business field who had a great deal of experience in management," she explains. "The team projects and presentations also prepared me for actual work situations by providing me with team building, analytical and management skills.”
