Meet alumna Yolanda Stephen, MBA '12

After graduating with her bachelor’s degree, Yolanda Stephen worked in the communication field for nearly 10 years before returning to school to earn her Master of Business Administration. "I wanted to get the work experience under my belt before delving into my MBA," Stephen explains. "But my initial goal was to wait a few years, and with getting married and having two young children in that time period, it turned into a 10-year wait."

Finding support

In making the decision to pursue her MBA at University of Phoenix, Stephen was concerned about the time element and how she would be able to complete her coursework with her fulltime work schedule. She opted to attend classes at a University of Phoenix campus in Georgia. “University of Phoenix gave me the best experience because I could attend class just one day a week, in addition to other time completing classwork, and not have to put my career on hold.”

In addition to the convenient class schedule, Stephen was impressed with the instructors she encountered and the team environment they fostered. “It was nice to go through the program from start to finish with the same group of classmates. It created a team environment that mirrors the environment found in the workplace.”

Moving up

Stephen was promoted to manager of communications at Goodwill. Her extensive work experience and education helped set her up for the next level in her career. “Earning my MBA also built my confidence. From my MBA program, I was able to put into play what I was learning in the classroom toward my career.”
