Course level: Undergraduate

This course introduces students to creative writing in various genres. The purpose of this course is to develop and expand students’ imaginative writing processes and to develop and expand their understanding of the human experience through creative writing. This would include identifying elements of writing and developing skills and techniques for creative writing in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction writings.

  • Plot a short story for dramatic effect.

  • Use a point of view appropriate to your story.

Writing The Personal Essay

  • Identify the elements of a personal essay.
  • Structure a personal essay for emotional and aesthetic impact.
  • Apply style and voice for emotional and aesthetic impact.
  • Give appropriate peer feedback to guide revision.

Feedback and Final Analysis

  • Apply peer and instructor feedback to guide revision.
  • Synthesize how the writing process differs according to genre.
