Students will learn about the evolving functions and uses of technology to support the documentation of vital health information contained in a patient's electronic health record. This course will introduce students to software applications, claims and reimbursement information, as well as regulatory compliance requirements. Students will examine forms, routing, and reporting of patient records in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will use an electronic health record (EHR) software to reinforce quality and data management of patient information.

  • Explain the different types of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems used in various health care settings.
  • Explain the functions and benefits of practice management applications.
  • Demonstrate the ability to enter and retrieve patient information in the EHR.

  • Identify forms and clinical documentation elements commonly present in outpatient and hospital patient records.
  • Explain the benefits of clinical documentation templates for data capture.
  • Explain computerized provider order entry (CPOE).
  • Explain EHR charting tasks performed by non-clinical staff.

  • Identify integrated hardware devices used with EHRs.
  • Demonstrate the ability to edit, store, transmit electronic patient information and acquire external patient data.
  • Identify tasks required to maintain EHR applications.
  • Explain the importance of ensuring documentation integrity, disaster planning, and EHR data recovery.
  • Discuss how users are trained on the use of EHRs.

  • Demonstrate the ability to post patient payments, generate face/admission sheets, encounter forms, insurance verification reports, and patient statements.
  • Explain the basic characteristics and application of required code sets.
  • Describe sources and methods of payment for healthcare services.
  • Explain the impact of complete, accurate and timely charting on coding and reimbursement.

  • Explain how different types of reports are used.
  • Explain importance of data collection and reporting for clinical quality improvement and revenue cycle management.
  • Apply understanding of report types to generate basic census, clinical quality improvement, and financial reports.

  • Identify professional standards and HIPAA Privacy Rule compliant processes pertaining to the release of patient information (ROI).
  • Identify administrative, physical, and technical safeguards used to secure protected health information (PHI).
  • Explain the purpose, use and effects of Health Information Exchange (HIE).
  • Discuss other applicable regulatory compliance issues impacting Electronic Health Records.

  • Identify common study techniques to review key topics covered in prior weeks.
  • Apply knowledge acquired throughout the course to practice exam taking skills and demonstrate competency of content at the level necessary to pass the CEHRS exam.
  • Discuss the role of certifications in health professions.
