This course focuses on the most current research, theory, and methods, and instructional strategies related to content-based literacy instruction in single subject classrooms at the secondary level. Foundations and trends in content area literacy, academic language, and disciplinary reading and writing are addressed in this course. Teacher candidates will examine strategies for teaching diverse learners and ways to integrate technology, as well as create comprehensive content-specific lessons which promote literacy development. Guided field experience, based on work in a single subject content area classroom, is incorporated into the course requirements.
