Course level: Undergraduate
This course introduces students to the nature of language and the way in which language is acquired and used in society. It also addresses grammatical aspects of language such as syntax, semantics, and pragmatics and changes in language over time. Stages of language acquisition and bilingual development will also be discussed.
Prerequisites
- ENG/100 – Critical Reading and Composition OR
- a minimum of 3 college credits of College Composition

Morphology and Syntax

- Define the words grammar and syntax.
- Distinguish between phrases and clauses.
- Identify different sentence types based on the clauses used to construct each type.
Semantics and Pragmatics
- Differentiate among homonyms, synonyms, antonyms, and hyponyms.
- Explain how innate biological factors and cultural factors can influence the interpretation of nonverbal communication.
- Describe how context shapes meaning.
- Restate the meaning of language shift and language attitude.
Sociolinguistics and Language Acquisition
- Outline the stages of first-language acquisition.
- Contrast the different forms of bilingualism.
- Describe second-language acquisition.
- Summarize our capacity to create language.
Sign Language and Speech
- Compare and contrast how sign language is acquired by children who are deaf and hearing children.
- Discuss speech acquisition in hearing children and children who are deaf.
