Course level: Undergraduate

This course provides an overview of the integration of technology within the health care industry. Students will examine systems, networking and database concepts, the processes used in the selection and application of electronic health records, and the evaluation of future information technology systems. Methods to make informed business decisions related to the use of technology in health care will be addressed.

Week 1 - Technology Environment

  • Describe the current health care industry information technology application and hardware trends.
  • Explain the importance of support and maintenance within a health care technology environment.

Week 2 - Health Care Processes & Compliance

  • Describe the different types of health care processes.
  • Explain the challenges associated with compliance in a health care IT setting.

Week 3 - Health Care Network

  • Describe the components and structure of a health care network.
  • Identify the factors that affect the implementation and maintenance of a health care network.

Week 4 - Health Care Databases

  • Compare and contrast Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Explain the different databases that make up a health care network. 
  • Describe the importance of interoperability among applications.

Week 5 - Health Care Security, Privacy and Risk

  • Explain the components of a disaster recovery plan.
  • Discuss privacy and ethical issues related to PHI.
  • Explain the effects of regulations on a health care network.
