This course is designed to provide the nurse practitioner student with the information and skills to initiate and monitor drug therapy. This course will integrate advanced knowledge regarding the clinical application of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, techniques and methods of drug prescribing, approaches to data collection and problem-solving with discussions about drug therapy for common acute and chronic diseases. Emphasis will be on the practical application of important concepts used in clinical practice for clients across the lifespan.

    Pharmacology, Pharmacokinetics, and Drug Therapy Decision-Making for the Integumentary System

    • Analyze behaviors and issues related to addiction, diversion, and abuse.
    • Distinguish between the basic concepts of pharmacology and pharmacokinetics that are applied to pharmacotherapeutics.
    • Describe vaccine mechanisms, manufacturing process, and challenges and controversies.
    • Explain the concept of, and potential for, drug interactions and discuss three distinctive types of adverse drug reactions.
    • Evaluate various drug therapies, including proper dosages, dosage forms, and dosage frequency, based on evidence-based guidelines for various medical conditions.
    • Evaluate considerations of vitamins, herbal and natural supplements, and over-the-counter medications as they relate to disease prevention and management.
    • Determine the effects of genetics, nutrition, culture, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status relative to pharmacology and pharmacokinetics.
    • Analyze federal and state laws associated with the controlled substance schedules.
