This course addresses legal and historical foundations of structured English immersion (SEI) foundations, instructional elements and language development of English learners in elementary grades, and culturally relevant instruction. Candidates explore SEI identification, SEI models, and English Language Proficiency Standards. Candidates also examine language acquisition theories, elements of language, and language domains. Candidates learn instructional strategies for academic English development in elementary settings. This course is designed to meet the standards set by the Arizona Department of Education.

    Instructional Elements â Reading and Writing

    • Compare effective grouping techniques and cooperative learning strategies.
    • Explain the purpose of using a thematic approach to teach English language learners in different content areas.
    • Examine reading and writing skills and strategies as they apply to elementary English learners.
    • Determine strategies for adapting content and curricular materials, including technology, for different proficiency levels.

    Instructional Elements â Listening, Speaking, Grammar, and Vocabulary

    • Examine listening and speaking skills and strategies as they apply to elementary English learners.
    • Identify grammatical skills and strategies that allow elementary English learners to apply their knowledge of syntax.
    • Apply academic vocabulary development strategies in multiple contexts.
    • Integrate the UDL principles in a lesson to differentiate instruction.

    Cultural Influences and Family/Community Engagement

    • Identify inclusive family and community engagement practices for aiding English language acquisition.
    • Differentiate the diverse populations that make up the English learner demographic.
    • Explain the role of cultural competency in English language instruction.
    • Analyze the sociocultural influences on English language learners.
    • Examine the impact of bilingualism and home language use on English language learners (ELLs).

    Language Development and English Language Proficiency Standards

    • Analyze language acquisition theoretical principles.
    • Examine the different elements of language and their relationship to the ELP Standards.
    • Examine the format and the alignment of the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to the Arizona English Language Arts Standards (Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language).
    • Integrate the English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards to plan, deliver, and evaluate instruction in different content areas.
    • Explore the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework as an approach to English language instruction for diverse learners.

    Assessment and Data Analysis

    • Explain the process for determining ELL program eligibility and other services.
    • Identify assessment standards and accommodations available to English learners.
    • Differentiate multiple assessments, such as diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, for English learners.
    • Analyze assessment data to track student status, progress, and to differentiate instruction.

    Structured English Immersion (SEI) Foundations

    • Explain historical and current trends, legislation, and landmark cases that have impacted English language education.
    • Distinguish basic Structured English Immersion (SEI) terminology.
    • Examine Arizona requirements for SEI models at the elementary level.
