Characteristics of Exceptionalities

Course level: Continuing Teacher Education

This course examines teaching and managing students with mild disabilities. Special emphasis is placed on specific learning disabilities, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and emotional disturbance. The etiology, characteristics, philosophies, service delivery models available, methods of instruction, and behavior management techniques of each disability area are discussed in depth. This course is not available for enrollment to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, and Kentucky.

Week 1

  • Examine the federal definitions of intellectual disability and developmental disability and the criteria for eligibility.
  • Investigate the background, etiology, and prevalence of intellectual and developmental disabilities.  
  • Analyze laws and litigation related to intellectual and developmental disabilities.  
  • Explore the learning characteristics of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. 
  • Evaluate current perspectives on the education of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  

Week 2

  • Examine the federal definitions of emotional disturbance and specific learning disability and the criteria for eligibility.
  • Investigate the etiology and prevalence of emotional disturbance and specific learning disability. 
  • Analyze laws and litigation related to emotional disturbance and specific learning disability.
  • Explore the learning characteristics of students with emotional disturbance and specific learning disability.
  • Investigate causal factors that may lead to emotional disturbance.
  • Examine the use of Response to Intervention (RTI) for the identification of specific learning disability.

Week 3

  • Examine educational considerations for students with mild disabilities.
  • Analyze curriculum options and implementation for students with mild disabilities.
  • Investigate methods of instruction and assessment for students with mild disabilities.
  • Explore general accommodations, modifications, and differentiation strategies for students with mild disabilities.
  • Examine the components of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

Week 4

  • Examine the relationship between continuum of educational services, educational placement, and the concept of Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). 
  • Describe an effective learning climate for students with mild disabilities.
  • Evaluate the benefits of a cooperative teaching model for teaching students with mild disabilities.
  • Examine behavior management strategies for students with mild disabilities.

A prerequisite is required for this course. The purpose of a prerequisite is to ensure students have the knowledge and/or skills needed to be successful in the course. Students are required to provide proof of prerequisite during the enrollment/registration process.

To meet a course prerequisite requirement, a student must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Successfully completed the prerequisites course at University of Phoenix

  • Provide proof via transcript of completing a comparable course (at least 75% match) or higher level course with at least a grade of C at another institution.

  • Have a University of Phoenix approved Student Appeal on file with the University.
